GM Maurice Ashley The Bruce Buffer (UFC Fame) Of The Chess World

The following video is from the recent (May 2010) launch party & fundraiser for Anatoly Karpov's bid to become President of FIDE. The function was held at the Trump SoHo Hotel in New York, with Karpov, Kasparov and Carlsen in attendance.

The winners of an auction to raise funds for Karpov's FIDE president campaign played blitz games against Garry Kasparov & Magnus Carlsen (they each played 2 blitz games simultaneously).

The Master of Ceremonies for these blitz games was GM Maurice Ashley who performed his role with great style. Maurice is the closest the chess world has to the legendary Bruce Buffer, fight MC for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

Life and Chess - Benjamin Franklin Quotation

"Life is a kind of chess, with struggle, competition, good and ill events."
~ Benjamin Franklin

"This portrait statue of Benjamin Franklin overlooks the former site of Boston Latin School which Franklin, Samuel Adams, and John Hancock once attended. Franklin's place of birth was just one block away on Milk Street, across from the Old South Meeting House."

Action Chess Photography From XKCD.com

This idea had never occurred to me prior to seeing this page - People playing chess on rollercoasters from XKCD.com. The inspiration comes the cartoon (thumbnail above) found here.

K9 Plays Chess - Classic Doctor Who - But Non Legal Game

K9 Plays Chess:

The Doctor (Tom Baker) and K9 playing a game of chess in the BBC 'The Sunmakers' episode of Doctor Who.

What about the game?

Here is the starting positon with white to move.

Astonishingly The Doctor now plays an illegal move.

1. Qd4 (illegal) Qb3

2. axb4 Bd3+

K9 now announces - "Machine mind computes mate in 6 moves."

Well there is no mate in 6 moves.
This game however is still most likely a win for black.
Though K9 must still work hard to convert the win.

A disappointing chess game to have on this cult TV show.
